Full Moon Party on Koh Phangan, Thailand

Full Moon Party Thailand

Last night was the Full Moon Party (FMP) on Haad Rin Beach in Koh Phangan. I attended this event, which is why this post will be short and told mostly through photographs. If you’ve ever been to a black-light party in college, where everyone draws on each other’s white t-shirts with hi-lighter then you’ve been to a pre-FMP. But instead of hi-lighters, black-lights, and a few hundred people, the FMP has neon-painted bodies, fluorescent shorts, hi-lighter t-shirts, an actual full moon, and thousands of revelers imbibing mixed drinks and dancing to more than a dozen DJs on one packed beach.

Koh Phangan

Our night began on a speedboat from Ko Samui. We were soaked by the time we arrived at the FMP. One girl from our boat was sick from the trip.

The streets of Phangan were filled with vendors selling bad street food, bright tank-tops, mixed drinks stirred in pails that normally kids building sand castles would hold. At the end of this road, you hit the beach. It is madness. Drinking, dancing, men and women urinating in the sea. It’s so packed that people are dancing in between venues, moving to two different rhythms from two different DJs.

These are the pails with all of the ingredients for a mixed drink: liquor, soda, Red Bull.

I thought to myself, these are some stupid people. Then I tried it, confirming my opinion.

This is what happens when the fire jumprope hits you on the shoulder because someone else ruins your flow. Oh well, it’s better than getting a tattoo while intoxicated.

Makes me way too nervous. I’m going to pretend I didn’t read this one.

    What Eve said.

    • Somewhere Or Bust

No need to worry, Eve and Mrs. Gross. As it turns out, at 29 and 31, Marissa and I were the responsible older people at the full moon party. Thanks for your concern though.

Terrific post! (They all are.) I remember more than a few parties like this back in the late 60s/early 70s, most of which were both fun and educational. Good to see you’ve survived with minimal scarring – surely the internationally-recognized sign of a great bash.

Any event that has neon glow in the dark paint is a good one in my books. 😉
