Dancing in Dubai

Dancing in Dubai Spinning Dancer with Lights

You don’t need words to experience the beauty of dancing in Dubai. Here are a series of photographs and videos, in which I hope I captured the artful bellydancing and mesmerizing illuminated twirling that I experienced in Dubai.

Bellydancing in Dubai

The photograph above was taken during a wonderful Lebanese feast at the Atlantis Hotel in Dubai. All of the photographs below are set in the desert, after I went with Desert Gate on a desert safari and sandboarded the dunes.

The Illuminated Desert Twirler

The dancer in the photograph below began his routine by spinning in circles. While this would have been more impressive if he would have loaded up on beers first, it was still mildly entertaining to watch him spin on stage. The repeated action seemed as if one or both of the following consequences would occur: dizziness or dehydration. And this I imagined/hoped would bring about the same results: Getting sick all over the tourists who were still coming down from the nausea of dune bashing through the desert in 4x4s. (I was thinking about the scene in my favorite ’80s movie, Goonies, when Chunk describes to the Fratellis how he inspired an entire audience, well, to blow chunks.)

More impressive than this dancer’s ability not to get sick was when he raised the Bedouin village’s electric bill.
